Winners and losers of 2010.

Winners and losers of 2010.

With a business of more than 150 crores, Salman Khan, the actor, Sonakshi Sinha, the actress, Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Khan the producers of the film Dabaang had been the greatest winners of 2010. The director Abhinav Kashyap had utilized the team of Dabanng including the composers Sajid Wajid, actors Sonu Sood, Mahesh Manjarekar and singers Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal to their best capabilities. The other hit films of the year included Rajneeti, Housefull, Ishqiya, Golmaal 3 and Peepli Live.

To everyone’s surprise the big budget films like Raavan, Kites, Guzarish collapsed at the box-office. Tees Mar Khan had got a good opening. After few weeks it will be seen whether it ends up as hit or not.

Priyanka Chopra had a bad year with all her films ending up in flops including Pyaar Impossible and Anjaana Anjaani. Hrithik Roshan’s two films also flopped including Kites and Guzarish, but his acting in Guzarish had been appreciated. Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif had a decent year with one hit each including Golmaal 3 and Rajneeti. Ranbir Kapoor had a good year with his hit film Rajneeti, but his other film Anjaana Anjaani did mediocre business. Anil Kapoor’s No Problem also ended with mediocre business.

Ashutosh Gowarikar’s project Khelenge Hum Ji Jaan Se flopped and that was the biggest loss of the powerful director who had given super hit films like Jodha Akbar in the past. Akshay Kumar had both hits and flops in the year. While Housefull became hit, Khatta Meetha and Action Replayy flopped. Aishwarya Rai also had a number of flops in the year. It started with Raavan, continued with Action Replayy and ended in Guzarish. Abhishek Bacchan’s both the films Raavan and Khelen Hum Je Jaan Se flopped at box-office.

Ajay Devgan was another winner of the year. He had hits like Rajneeti and Golmaal 3. His other two films like Once Upon a Time in Mumbai and Atithi Tum Kab Jayoge did decent business. “munni badnam hui” and “shiela, shiela ki jawani” were the biggest hit songs of the years, both being item numbers.

Salman Khan and Vidya Balan won the Star Entertainment Awards 2010.

Salman Khan and Vidya Balan won the Star Entertainment awards 2010.

Salman Khan after giving the greatest business of bollywood of the year 2010, with the success of film Dabaang had won the Star Entertainment Award 2010 for the best actor of the year. He won it to everyone’s surprise. He did not attend the award ceremony shown in Star Plus Channel, but his brother Arbaaz Khan and his wife Malaika Arora Khan took the award on his behalf. He said that he was surprised that Salman Khan had no luck in getting best actor awards previously inspite of giving huge blockbusters in the last 20 years. Vidya Balan won the best actress award for her brilliant performance in the film Ishqiya.

Veteran actor Dharmender won life time achievement award for his immense contribution in bollywood films. Jeetender and Asha Parekh presented the award. Amitabh Bacchan won the actor of the decade award. Aishwarya Rai won the actress of the decade award.

Ranbir Kapoor won the star entertainment award for the best young talent of the decade. He did not attend the ceremony but Rishi Kapoor received the award on his behalf. Priyanka Chopra won the star entertainment award for the best young female talent of the decade.

The best director of the award was won by Abhinav Kashyap for his direction in the film Dabaang. The award for the most entertaining film of the year was also won by Dabaang. It was very obvious that after doing a business worth Rs 150 crores it would emerge as the greatest winner.

The director of the decade award went to Raju Hirani. The most entertaining film of the decade went to the film The Three Idiots. There were some good star performances of Rani Mukherjee and Akshay Kumar. The awards rewarded the better performers for their hard work.

The Romantic singer Sailen Mukherjee had remained unsung.

The Romantic singer Sailen Mukherjee had remained unsung.

The 50s and 60s are considered to be the golden age of Bengali music. Singers of different style and classical background had glorified Bengali music including male singers like Manobendra Mukherjee, Manna Dey, Shyamal Mitra, Hemanta Mukherjee, Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, and female singers like Sandhya Mukherjee, Geeta Dutt, Shipra Bose, Ila Bose and others.

Sailen Mukherjee appeared in Bengali musical arena during that time. Some of his basic discs had been extremely romantic. His song “dar chop chop ko” takes the listeners to paradise with the background of boat travelling across river Ganges. His song “chander alloy rater pakhi” is equally romantic. The use of the piano in the romantic songs of Sailen Mukherjee requires special mention.

He was brilliant in his song “betha Jodi pao tobu jeno”. The song has slow beat to suit the mood created by the lyrics. His fast number “e mon amar jano” had been very popular in the 60s. The other song which require special mention include “ei shur hrihaye charalo”. Sailen Mukherjee gave life to epic poet Satyendranath Dutta’s brilliant poetry “jhorna jhorna shundari jhorna”. The tune of the song had balanced the words written by the legendary poet and expresses the flow of water of spring. The other landmark songs of Sailen Mukherjee included "eto je shonai gaan", "tomar moner ei prante", "aji oi akash pare", "tomay dekhechi koto rupe kotobar", etc.

Sailen Mukherjee sang two songs to address the women of Bengal including “ogo lojjaboti” and “priyo bandhabi”. The shy representation of Bengali women had been expressed by Sailen Mukherjee.

Sailen Mukherjee had given immortal music to another singer of golden age namely Manobendra Mukherjee. One of the most romantic songs included “tumi thako ami jai”. The song of Manobendra Mukherjee composed by Sailen Mukherjee which stormed Bengal in the late 50s included “bare bare ke jeno dake amare”. Sailen Mukherjee’s other composition for Manobendra Mukherjee which was equally romantic included “malatire sune jete hoyeche tumi kotodur”.

Sailen Mukherjee romantic tunes to female singers of the golden age as well. One of his romantic number composed for Alpone Banerjee included “bole chile tumi gaan shonabe sei ashae din guni”. His romantic composed for Bani Ghoshal namely “je phool bidayer pothe nirobe jhoriya jae” flabbergasted the bengalies. His romantic tune composed for Sujata Chakravarty namely “Jodi jaano e premer nei kono khoy” also stormed Bengal in the early 60s.

Sailen Mukherjee did not get a scope of composing music for many Bengali films as the film arena was dominated by Manobendra Mukherjee, Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra and others. Even then Bengal cannot forget and ignore the contribution of Sailen Mukherjee during the golden age who always remained unsung and unrecognized. His songs and compositions should be preserved and restored.

End of 2010

When I think back to the year 2010, a lot has been accomplished. When midnight struck, I had the best new years by starting it off with people that I loved. I had no idea that in the year of 2010, I would graduate from college. That realization came at the end of March 2010. Though my last quarters in college were academically difficult, I tried my hardest to make the most out of it. Having turned at the ripe age of 21 in the beginning of January, it was my time to go out and live that life. I tried going out with as little free time as I had, even though that was barely anything.
Realizing that I would soon start another life after college, I made sure I kept the friends I found valuable in my college life. I have met so many diverse people during my 3 years at UCI, but it really takes an effort to keep a friendship going. That was probably one of my hardest realizations when I moved back home in June. Orange County seemed like a lifetime away; I was too lazy to drive there, too lazy to hit people up.
Having I would think an impressive variety of accomplishment on my resume, I thought it was be easy to find a job right when I graduated in media. Here I go, applying to numerous positions on various websites, and still no answer. My big break in my self esteem came when I got the intern position at the local television station KTLA. Here was my dream-to work in the entertainment department for a well known station. Though the hours were not inviting, I committed over 3 months to my internships where I learned how to help produce the Morning News Show that airs everyday. On the way I met great people and even celebrities.
Even though the job market is very difficult at the time, I managed to find a part-time job for a mortgage company in Santa Monica. At the time where I also had my internship, it provided the strenuous yet right balance between my dream internship and a job where I can make some pretty good money on the side-->I can't complain.
On this New Year's Eve, I am reflecting on how crazy this year has been with all my accomplishments, relationships, and rollercoaster moments. Many times I have felt alone, and at a crossroads, but I've made it through yet another year. 2011 is about to arrive, and I'm still wondering what I'm meant to do with my life. Being out of college for 6 months now, I have no idea what direction my life is going though I do know where I want to be...and that is EVERYWHERE!!! I have a feeling that 2011 is about to be another great year. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

You Just Do You, Imma Do Me

~Bring on the New Year!!!~

I don't know about you all, but I am sooooo ready and pumped to welcome the
New Year!

Bring it!

We had a fabulous 2010 . . .
~Went on an amazing trip to Europe~
~Started our investment portfolio together~
~I built my business/passion~
~We adopted LuLu~
~I started my blog~
~We turned a room into my office~
~Spent great time with family and friends~
etc.

Now onto a New beginning.

I decided instead of writing a long list of resolutions, I wanted a word for 2011.
(kind of like in Eat, Pray, Love!)
and my word is . . .

~Balance~

I am ready to forge forward in life, but also to find balance between everything.

2011 for me will be all about organization, sifting out some unnecessary things to make room for the fun and fulfilling, getting my life together, making sure to balance work with an adventurous life, and make sure to spend quality time and make many memories with my amazing husband, and all my loved ones.

I want to delve deeper into a few great friendships, and focus on quality, not quantity.

I will continue to work on my Day Zero Challenge, 101 goals in 1001 days and blog about our adventures.

We have TWO trips around Europe planned (loooove mileage reward cc!), and this may be our last full year to travel and only enjoy each other before we think about any additions (what?!)

So in 2011 I will balance all my craziness so that I can live a full, happy life.

What is your word for 2011?!

I hope you all have a fun New Year's Eve planned with the one's you love, can't wait to see pics, etc. in the New Year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR blog friends!!!

Happy birthday to Deepika Padukone.

Happy birthday to Deepika Padukone.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Deepika Padukone on 5th January, 2010. Deepika Padukone, the daughter of renowned badminton player Prakash Padukone, started her career in the fashion world from where the producers and directors got impressed.

She made a dream debut in the film Om Shanti Om, opposite Shahrukh Khan. Shahrukh Khan was one of the biggest icons of bollywood films till 2007. Akshay Kumar had shaken up the box-office domination of Shahrukh Khan after giving many blockbusters in the last few years. It was a dream which came true for Deepika Padukone to act opposite Shahrukh Khan in the romantic blockbuster. Farah Khan and Shahrukh Khan searched a new face for the film. Deepika Padukone answered their query.

The film was related to reincarnation. Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan had double roles in the film. Deepika was killed by breaking out of fire in a grand studio. The entire story of her death was recreated to bring the perpetrators of crime before the people at large. The soul of Deepika Padukone did the rest.

The film had similar story line like that of Karz. But the excellent music of the film and decent performance from Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan had converted a decent film into a commercially successful mission. The songs of Sonu Nigam and others like “tumko paya hai to jaise”, “om shanty om”, “ankho me teri”, etc., became landmark hits in 2007.

Deepika Padukone bagged the best debutant award in the filmfare and Om Shanti Om bagged filmfare awards under different categories. As Deepika Padukone created a huge expectation from the performance in the first film the viewers started believing in her capability in the following films as well.

She did well again in 2008 in the film Bacchna Aye Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor, Minissha Lamba and Bipasha Basu. The film was related to the story of how Ranbir Kapoor met three girls namely Bipasha Basu, Deepika Padukone and Minissha Lamba and how their interaction created an impact in the life of Ranbir Kapoor.

Again the fabulous locations and quality music composed by Vishal Shekhar impressed the viewers. The hit songs included “bacchna aye haseeno”, “ki mujhe pyar hai”, etc. Deepika Padukone probably matched Ranbir Kapoor the best if compared with the other performers in the same film.

In 2009, Deepika’s much awaited film Chandni Chowk To China was released in January. She had acted opposite superstar Akshay Kumar who had shown his action skills and comedy skills as well in the film. For the requirement of the film Deepika Padukone had learned martial art as well which was done by Priyanka Chopra in the past. But the film did mediocre business.

The other film of Deepika Padukone that was released in 2009 was Love Aaj Kaal. It was the film of Saif Ali Khan and he acted opposite Deepika Padukone. The film became a big hit and the romantic combination of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone was accepted by the audience. The music of Pritam was well appreciated by the audience including the song “chor bazari”.

After that Deepika Padukone had acted in many films in 2010, including Billo Barbar, Lafange Parindey, Larenge Hum Ji Jaanse, etc., and acted opposite many actors including Farhan Akshtar, Abhishek Bacchan (where he played the role of Masterda Surjo Sen in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s flm), etc.

The viewers expect Deepika Padukone to revive her position and continue her great work in the years to come in bollywood films and other films.

Manisha Koirala appeared in Sourav Ganguly's Dadagiri.

Manisha Koirala appeared in Sourav Ganguly’s Dadagiri.

Sweet bollywood star of the 90s, Manisha Koirala appeared in Sourav Ganguly’s program Dadagiri, shown in Zee TV, on 25th December, 2010. That was the Christmas surprise that Sourav Ganguly had given the audience. Manisha spoke in English and hindi and Ganguly translated the Bengali version to her in English.

The quiz program having different rounds like straight drive round, slog over round, bapi bari jaa round, googly round, etc., had mainly questions related to the film career of Manisha Koirala. She had a great background being the daughter of the Prime Minister of Nepal. Incidentally her family was the royal family. The viewers of Bengal saw her the first time after marriage. She got married this year only.

She disclosed before Sourav Ganguly and the audience that the entry into bollywood films was quite smooth for her, without struggle. She studied in Benaras and stayed in India before joining films. She struggled to maintain the stardom once she attained it after the success of Saudagar, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Khamoshi, etc.

Manisha Koirala shared her experience about working with director Maniratnam who tried to change her image from a soft spoken girl to a terrorist in the film Dil Se. When asked about the superiority of Shahrukh Khan and Amir Khan, she said that Sharukh Khan was crowd puller, but Amir Khan was more versatile, who experimented with his roles.

When asked about the present trend of films, she said there is a tendency among directors to make films on social dramas involving mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, etc., unlike the films that used to be made during her times, that is the 90s. She had been very humble in her conversation and carried the sweet smile that she displayed in majority of her films like Lajja, 1942 A lovestory, etc. Souav Ganguly should be appreciated for handling stars with dignity and politeness. His program continuing for the last few months had been absolute success.
