Wahida Rehman, Shashi Kapoor received Padmabhushan.

Wahida Rehman, Shashi Kapoor received Padmabhushan.

The Indian civilian awards were given on Republic day, the 26th January, 2011. This year India did not give Bharatratna, the greatest civilian award to anyone. Sachin Tendulkar’s name emerged but due to age and other factors, he did not receive it.

Many bollywood personalities did receive the prestigious awards. Veteran actress Wahida Rehman, Shashi Kapoor and composer Khayyam received Padmabhushan. Composer Khayyam deserved it long time back, with his brilliant creations in the films Phir Subah Hogi, Akhri Khat, Kabhi Kabhi, Shagun, Umrao Jaan, etc. He deserved the national award for the best music a number of times. But it is sad that other talented composers like Shankar Jaikishan, Roshanlal Nagrath, Madanmohan did not receive the award. Wahida Rehman played epic roles in Guru Dutt’s films Pyaasa, Kagaz Ka Phool, etc., Raj Kapoor’s Teesri Kasam, Vijay Anand’s Guide, etc. She had rightly received the award during her lifetime. It is good that Shashi Kapoor had received during his lifetime also, as he is very sick at the moment. Singer S. P. Balasubhramanium received this award for his excellence in music. He received national award as best singer 6 times in his career.

Many bollywood personalities received Padmashree award, including actress Tabu, Kajol and Irfaan Khan. Irfaan Khan had kept his mark in the field of parallel films for a long time, and lastly got his dues for epic performances in films like Billu Barber, Knock Out, Corporate, etc. Tabu had remained a powerful actress with landmark performances in films lime Maachis, Tarqueeb, Astitva, etc.

Actor A. Nageshwara Rao of Telegu Film Industry received Padmabishushan. He had remained unparallel in his performances in films like Dharampatni. He had been in the industry for more than 69 years.

Singer Usha Uthup who had sung in many languages pop songs, classical singer Pandit Ajoy Chakravarty and veteran Rabindrasangeet singer Dwijen Mukherjee received the Padma awards. All of them deserved it and should have received quite earlier. It is very sad that just because singer Mohammad Rafi passed away in his 50s he neither received Padmabhushan, or Padmabibhushan.

Many other scholars, talented Indians, sports personalities received the Padma awards, including Indian cricketer VVS. Laxman.

Happy birthday to Tabu.

Happy birthday to Tabu on 4th November.

All the viewers of bollywood films had wished happy birthday to Tabu on the 4th of November, 2010. Although these days Tabu is not in the news to the extent she used to be few years back, she still enjoys popularity from bollywood audience.

When she entered films, within very short period of time she was recognized by the directors of parallel films and realistic films and experimented with her in dynamic roles. Gulzar gave her a challenging role in the film Machis. It was related to the story on terrorism existing in Punjab in the 90s. Tabu represented a member of a family who was affected by such terrorism. Her performance stand out among other notable performances of Om Puri and Chandrachud Singh in the same film.

She played a challenging role in the film Tarqeeb. The film was related to suspense of her death. She was killed and Nana Patekar did an impressive investigation to unearth the truth as to her killing. The first part of the film showed Tabu’s struggle in maintaining her family and her fight against poverty. The early part her relevance in respect of finding the motive of killing her in the film.

She played the role of a strict police officer in the film Kohram with Nana Patekar. Nana Patekar took the disguise of a journalist to unearth the identity of Big B in the film who was alleged to have been involved with criminal activities. At the end of the film both Big B and Nana Patekar co-operated with each other in their fight against Danny and his men who were really involved with anti-national activities.

Tabu was very impressive in her respective role in the film Hu Tu Tu. She also changed her image by performing in serio-comic performance in the film Bibi No.1, where she played the role of the wife of Anil Kapoor who helped Karishma Kapoor to bring peace in her family after her husband Salman Khan got involved in extra-marital affair with Sushmita Sen.

Tabu had acted in off-beat films like Chandni Bar and received critics acclamation for her performance in those types of films. She also acted in Mira Nair’s Hollywood film Namesake. Last year she played a notable role in the film Cheeni Kum with Big B where she depicted the character of a middle-aged lady who entered into an affair with an old man.

She is probably one of the Hyderabadi actresses, who had done well both in bollywood films as well as South Indian films. Even more than that her performance in the comedy film Hera Pheri, where she acted opposite Sunil Shetty had no similarity with the role of village girl in Virasat where she acted opposite Anil Kapoor. She had showed her range of acting over the last 15 years and other than Dimple Kapadia there are no actresses of contemporary period who has equal potential as that of Tabu. Although she had acted in Telegu films in 2008 like Pandurangadu, she had not played any important role in any bollywood film in 2009. In 2010, she acted in the film Toh Baat Pakki, but that film did mediocre business. Her admirers expect her make a strong comeback in bollywood films and contribute in both commercial and off-beat films.

Toh Baat Pakki should do good business.

Toh Baat Pakki should do good business.

The film Toh Baat Pakki should do good business. Director Kedar Shinde had relied upon comedy story for the success of his film. It had been produced by Ramesh S. Taurani.

Tabu had played an important role after a very long time. She played the role of a middle-class woman who had married Ayub Khan. She searched a rich and good person to get him married to her sister. Her sister again had a choice of her own.

She met Sharman Joshi who played the role of an engineer, in a grocery store. She allowed Sharman Joshi to stay in her own house so that he could meet her sister. He fell in love with the sister and agreed to marry her.

But when he sat in the seat of the bridegroom, he found a different girl. The film was full of comedy from the beginning till the end. There was lot of anxiety amongst the viewers to see Tabu perform, the last she was seen acting in a film was Cheeni Kum, which she did more than three years ago.

The music of the film had been composed by Pritam. The popular numbers included “jis din” sung by Mika Singh, “phir se” sung by Sonu Nigam and “karle mujhse pyar” sung by Pritam Chakravarty. The songs were not as catchy if compared to Pritam’s music in the film Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani or Jab We Met.

The film received a passive response in its opening week. These days halls are flooded with comedy films. At some point of time the viewers will get sick seeing comedy one after the other. Even then the story of the film was good.

Further due to presence of veteran artists like Tabu, Ayub Khan, Sharman Joshi, the acting had been powerful. The film should get more viewers in the days to come.

Happy birthday to Sunil Shetty.

Tabu's performance in Astitva was extraordinary.

Tabu’s performance in Astitva was extraordinary.

Tabu is considered as one of the most powerful actresses of the last 10 years. She had kept her mark in any type of film ranging from commercially successful films like Virasat, to refined commercial films like Chachi 420, to off-beat films like Machis.

In Astitva, she had played her role with such amount of perfection that her performance could very well be equated with any of the legendary performances of Shabana Azmi or Smita Patil. She married Sachin Kherekar who was a wealthy person.

But he used to stay abroad for most part of the year due to job requirements. Tabu had to stay for those months alone. Initially it was unbearable for her. After sometime she got a scope of learning classical music from Mohnish Behl who was a renowned classical singer in the film. Both of them got attached with each other.

It led to Tabu becoming the mother of Mohnish’s son. Initially when Tabu talked about it to her relatives, they advised her to get the child aborted. But for whatever reasons she did not do that. Sachin Kherekar considered the son to be his own and nurtured him.

After more than 20 years, Sachin Kherekar went through the diary maintained by Tabu and came to know about the affair. Also the fact that Mohnish Behl had given his entire property to Tabu had compelled him more to suspect his wife. When everything was disclosed he decided to divorce his wife and his son also humiliated his mother.
At the end of the film Tabu questioned the character of her own husband who had affairs with many women during his stay abroad. It could be excused just because he was a man. At the same time his incapability could not be made public. Tabu could not beget any child out of the marital wedlock with her husband.
Tabu even questioned the narrow-mindedness of her husband who could not even appreciate the truth of her husband who had disclosed it before him. Had he not mentioned it in the diary the husband would never had known about it. There were so many types of emotions that had be expressed in the film that unless the actress versatile callibre it would have been impossible to express.

Astitva can be considered as one of the greatest performances of Tabu who got a number of critics choice awards for her excellence in bollywood films. The viewers expect her to carry forward the rich legacy of powerful acting which was started by Shabana Azmi and Smita patil and carried forward by Dimple Kapadia.
