After Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri, he was probably the other actor who allowed the directors to do any experiment with him. He drew the attention of viewers all across the country with his strong performance in the film Prahar in the late 80s.

He not only acted in the film but also directed the film. The film was related to the story of a young boy whose mother was dragged into unlawful activities. He learned took military training and provided guidance to new students who joined the armed forces in India. The training schedule was very hectic and the strictness of Nana Patekar appealed to the masses.

After the training was over, one of his students who lost his legs while facing terrorists was killed by the underworld group. Nana Patekar came to Bombay, and took revenge against all of them. He was given shelter by Dimple Kapadia, who was the sister of Madhuri Dixit, the wife of Nana’s student.

The civilians in the area did not like the intervention of military personnel in the area. After Nana killed all the underworld members, he was tried in a court. The court ordered him to be sent to a mental asylum as he started taking the responsibilities of all the other civilians. The film had a strong social message and was admired by the intellectual viewers.

Nana Patekar stormed bollywood films with strong performance in the film Krantiveer. The film showed the use of common people by political leaders for creating riots and clashes between different communities. Nana Patekar killed most of them and supported the effort of Dimple Kapadia who played the role of a daring journalist. If his reserve personality in the film Prahar was appreciated, his aggressive acting in the film Krantiveer amused the viewers.

He also acted in comedy roles in films like Raju Ban Gaye Gentleman with Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. He was also sublime in the film Yashwant with Madhu. His uprightness caused trouble for his wife and friends.

He was also sublime in a muslim role in the film Ghulam-i-mustafa. He played the role of an underworld person who worked for the cause of a political leader played by Paresh Rawal. His wife Ravina Tandon was killed in the process. He then helped a South Indian family led by Aruna Irani, and stayed in her house to prevent the rival groups from creating any trouble against the family. The film had a strong message of national integration.

Nana Patekar also did a fantastic job in the film Hum Dono with Rishi Kapoor. He balanced the romantic acting of Rishi Kapoor opposite Pooja Bhatt with his witty performance and strong action. He did well opposite Big B and Tabu in the film Kohram.

Whenever people saw films like Ab Taak Chappan or Vadh, they had appreciated his strong personality which has always raised voice against the evil practices in the country. In Vadh he went on killing persons one after the other till it was discovered that he was the real killer. His negative acting in films like Parinda opposite Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff was also appreciated.

Nana Patekar was brilliant with Akshay Kumar and Anil Kapoor in the film Welcome. His role of mafia don amazed the viewers whose sister Katrina Kaif, who wanted to marry Akshay Kumar. But Akshay Kumar’s uncle Paresh Rawal never wanted Akshay to marry Katrina, due to Nana Patekar’s involvement in underworld activities. The film ended up being one of the super hit films of 2009.

He continued his different type of acting in other types of films like Ek: The Power of One. Bobby Deol was the leading actor in the film. Nana Patekar was the investigating officer who discovered that Bobby Deol was the criminal.

The viewers expect him to continue the good work in 2011 and show more dynamism in commercial and art films in future.

Happy birthday to Tabu.

Happy birthday to Tabu on 4th November.

All the viewers of bollywood films had wished happy birthday to Tabu on the 4th of November, 2010. Although these days Tabu is not in the news to the extent she used to be few years back, she still enjoys popularity from bollywood audience.

When she entered films, within very short period of time she was recognized by the directors of parallel films and realistic films and experimented with her in dynamic roles. Gulzar gave her a challenging role in the film Machis. It was related to the story on terrorism existing in Punjab in the 90s. Tabu represented a member of a family who was affected by such terrorism. Her performance stand out among other notable performances of Om Puri and Chandrachud Singh in the same film.

She played a challenging role in the film Tarqeeb. The film was related to suspense of her death. She was killed and Nana Patekar did an impressive investigation to unearth the truth as to her killing. The first part of the film showed Tabu’s struggle in maintaining her family and her fight against poverty. The early part her relevance in respect of finding the motive of killing her in the film.

She played the role of a strict police officer in the film Kohram with Nana Patekar. Nana Patekar took the disguise of a journalist to unearth the identity of Big B in the film who was alleged to have been involved with criminal activities. At the end of the film both Big B and Nana Patekar co-operated with each other in their fight against Danny and his men who were really involved with anti-national activities.

Tabu was very impressive in her respective role in the film Hu Tu Tu. She also changed her image by performing in serio-comic performance in the film Bibi No.1, where she played the role of the wife of Anil Kapoor who helped Karishma Kapoor to bring peace in her family after her husband Salman Khan got involved in extra-marital affair with Sushmita Sen.

Tabu had acted in off-beat films like Chandni Bar and received critics acclamation for her performance in those types of films. She also acted in Mira Nair’s Hollywood film Namesake. Last year she played a notable role in the film Cheeni Kum with Big B where she depicted the character of a middle-aged lady who entered into an affair with an old man.

She is probably one of the Hyderabadi actresses, who had done well both in bollywood films as well as South Indian films. Even more than that her performance in the comedy film Hera Pheri, where she acted opposite Sunil Shetty had no similarity with the role of village girl in Virasat where she acted opposite Anil Kapoor. She had showed her range of acting over the last 15 years and other than Dimple Kapadia there are no actresses of contemporary period who has equal potential as that of Tabu. Although she had acted in Telegu films in 2008 like Pandurangadu, she had not played any important role in any bollywood film in 2009. In 2010, she acted in the film Toh Baat Pakki, but that film did mediocre business. Her admirers expect her make a strong comeback in bollywood films and contribute in both commercial and off-beat films.

Happy birthday to Madhu.

Happy birthday to Madhu.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Madhu on 26th March, 2010. Madhu, also known as Madhubala Raghunath had contributed a lot to the bollywood industry especially in the 90s. During the 90s, terrorism became an important issue in India. Many directors addressed the problem by revealing them in films.

Director Mani Ratnam addressed the issue relating to terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir in his Roja. Roja was probably the most successful film of Madhu. It had been shown that Madhu was married to Arvind Swami after he rejected Madhu’s sister for marriage. In fact Madhu’s sister had an affair with another person and told Arvind Swami about it.

Arvind Swami was a renowned computer engineer and his senior officer asked him to take an assignment and go to Kashmir. Arvind Swami took Madhu and went to Kashmir. Over there Arvind Swamy was kidnapped by the terrorists led by Pankaj Kapoor. They demanded the release of their leader who was arrested and kept in custody.

Madhu went to all the officers present over there for the release of the terrorist leader for the sake of her husband. At the end of the film Arvind Swamy freed himself and came and met Madhu after being tortured by the terrorists. The film became super hit, with powerful direction, brilliant music of AR Rehman and powerful acting of mainly Arvind Swami, Madhu and Pankaj Kapoor. The songs “roja janeman”, “rukmini rukmini”, “dil hai chota sa” stormed bollywood films in mid-90s.

Madhu did well even in action films like Phool Aur Kaante, opposite Ajay Devgan. The film was related to the romantic story between Ajay Devgan and Madhu and the barriers created by anti-socials in their way. The music given in that film by Nadeem Shravan was also successful. The songs “premi pagal”, ‘tumse milne ko dil karta hai”, etc., sung by mainly Kumar Shanu and Alka Yagnik, became very successful.

Madhu was also sublime in other films like Hum Hai Bemisaal, Diljaale, Return of the Jewel Thief, etc. She had acted with Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and other leading stars of bollywood films. She was sublime in the film Yashwant opposite Nana Patekar. Her husband was adamant police of officer and she became a successful officer after passing civil service exam. She compromised with the uncompromising character played by Nana Patekar who gave her shelter and married her.

She acted in a number of Tamil and Malayalam films like Ottaya Pattalam as well. In the late 90s, all of a sudden she faded out of the bollywood industry. The viewers expect her to make a comeback very soon.

Mallika Sherawat had transformed herself.

Mallika Sherawat had transformed herself.

When Mallika Sherawat initially joined bollywood films, she was considered as an actress who was only inclined to expose herself. Her films Murder and Khwawish were related to body exposure.

Although Murder became superhit and Reema Lamba, better known as Mallika Sherawat became a hot star in 2004, she still required films which could allow her to show her acting talents. She also received international recognition with her performance in a small role in the film Myth, opposite Jackie Chan.

From the film Pyar Ke Side Effects opposite Rahul Bose, viewers started recognizing her as a talented actress. She was sublime in the film Aap Ka Suroor, where she played a negative role. Also her dance number in the Abhishek Bacchan’s Guru titled “maiya maiya” brought her prominence.

She did a great job in the film Maan Gaye Mugha-i-Azam. She was the wife of stage actor Paresh Rawal. She got attached with Rahul Bose, a member of the audience. Rahul Bose used the entire acting crew of Paresh Rawal to address terrorists. In his operation Mallika Sherawat played the major role. Mallika’s lips in the song “maan gaye mughal-i-azam” entertained the crowds. The song was made in the form of -a satire, and the play Mughal-i-Azam also created with the idea of addressing political questions of the relevant period.

In Welcome, she pretended to be the wife of Akshay Kumar, on the request of Paresh Rawal. Paresh Rawal never wanted his relative Akshay Kumar to marry a girl from a criminal family. But he entered into an affair with Katrina Kaif, the sister of underworld dons Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor. When Mallika Sherawat wept before Feroz Khan, the boss of both Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar, the marriage was cancelled. Although the role was short, Mallika Sherawat did very well.

She was sublime in the film Ugly Aur Paagli, opposite Ranbir Shorey. The film was related to betting, and Mallika had given slaps after slaps to Ranbir with one kiss only in a comedy drama.

In 2009, Mallika Sherawat featured in Kamal Hassan’s action drama Dasavatharam along with Asin. The other film Dhakreys Bed had convinced the viewers that Mallika can act, and given a proper script, can do better than other actresses of the contemporary period.

She had transformed herself into a promising actress. The viewers expect her to continue the good work and not sign cheap roles where only exposure is required, not acting.

Review of Ek: The Power of One.

Review of Ek: The Power of One.

Bollywood films did not have brilliant start in 2009, the way it had opened in 2008 with hit films like Jodha Akbar or Race at the very early time of the year. Due to recession and other reasons this year films like Billu Barber, Dilli -6 and Raaz – the mystery continues created some interest. The viewers don’t know for sure when the other films were released. The new film Ek: The Power of One also does not look as a very promising film.

Director Sangeeth Sivan has experimented with Bobby Deol and Shriya Sharan in the film Ek: The Power of One. Bobby Deol had a role which was similar to the ones he had played in films like Badal and Bichoo. He had been hired by a CM aspirant to shape an assassination and gather sympathy from the voters. But the killing happened in reality and Bobby Deol had to hide and fled to Hoshiarpur.

He entered a Punjabi House and pretended as the lost son. Over there he got involved with local problems. There were greedy farmers who wanted to grab the land of the relative of Bobby Deol by force. So he got a scope of showing his action skills in that part.

The only interesting part of the film involved the investigation carried out by Nana Patekar in respect of the killing of the CM. It has been seen in the past that whenever powerful actors were given smart scripts they changed the mood of the film. The best example can be Om Puri’s performance in Bobby Deol’s film Gupt. He accelerated the pace of the film and countered the aggressive performance of Bobby Deol.

The same thing happened in this film. Nana Patekar had created interest in the minds of the viewers from the time he stepped in. The film also got pace and direction. Shriya Saran did well but the script did not have much for her.

In a nutshell the film does not have the masala to end up being a blockbuster. Bobby Deol desperately requires a super hit film to remain in the elite list where he was at the time of release of films like Gupt or Soldier. These days action films are not doing well, so in that perspective, if the film does moderate business it is fare for the producer and director.
