Happy birthday to Bobby Deol

Happy birthday to Bobby Deol.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Bobby Deol, on 27th February, 2011. He had acted in many successful films in his long career, and the new generation expects even better performance from the stylish actor.

Being the son of Dharmender and brother of Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol required some special skills to create his identity and look different to the viewers. He showed his stylish accent in the film Gupt which was a murder mystery. Bobby Deol was alleged to have killed his father Raj Babbar and was sent to jail. He escaped from the jail with the help of Manisha Koirala and proved himself innocent.

He matched the villainish performance of Kajol in the film and balanced the performances of a series of villains in the film including Prem Chopra, Raza Murad, etc. Om Puri was sublime in the role of a police inspector and Bobby Deol showed his personality when both of them met each other. He even gave good lips in the songs composed by Viju Shah like “bechaniya”, “gupt, gupt”, etc.

Producers started casting Bobby Deol in stylish roles especially in action pact films like Soldier. He did very well opposite Preeti Zinta. Most of the film was shot in Australia and Bobby Deol proved himself both as a romantic actor and also action. All the songs of the film were hit including “soldier, soldier”, “mehfil me ekbaar”, etc. His action stunts opposite Suresh Oberoi was ably appreciated by the viewers.

After few years Bobby Deol changed his hair style but continued to act in action films like Badal and Bicchu. In both these films his heroine was Rani Mukherjee who added attraction in the films. Bobby Deol brought out the vengeance in the character of terrorists especially in the film Badal. But someway or the other due to strong domination of Shahrukh Khan mainly in romantic films, Bobby Deol’s films did mediocre business and he did not get the recognition he deserved.

Even in suspense thrillers like Ajnabee, Bobby Deol balanced the villanish performance of Akshay Kumar and individual performances of Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. The film had many twists and turns and Bobby Deol ultimately took revenge against Akshay Kumar for planting a false case against him.

Bobby Deol even did well in the film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya opposite Aishwarya Rai. His films Jhoom Barabar Jhoom did not do that well in 2007, but his film Heroes in 2008 did good business.

In 2009, his film Ek, The Power of One did moderate business. He had shown excellence in action films, but for the last few years action films did not do great business. With strong competition from Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Amir Khan and the new heroes Bobby Deol has to do something exceptional to maintain his stardom.

In 2011, all the three Deols namely, Bobby Deol, Sunny Deol and Dharmender appeared in the film Yaamla Paagla Deewana. The film had been released in January, 2011 and did great business Bobby Deol played the role of a thief who was reformed by his brother Sunny Deol. He showed his comedy instincts in the film. The film was named with Mohammad Rafi’s super hit song “jat yaamla pagla deewana” picturised on actor Dharmender in the mid 70s in the film Pratigya.

The viewers expect him to do even better in bollywood films in the years to come.

Yamla Pagla Diwana had got a good opening.

Yamla Pagla Diwana had got a good opening.

The film Yamla Pagla Diwana had got a very good opening. Dharmender and Sunny Deol had a brilliant box-office presence in bollywood films for the last 50 years. So any film where both appeared together is destined to do well. The film had been directed by Samir Karnik. The title of the film was inspired from the 1975 Dharmender’s film Pratigya’s landmark song. The song was titled “mai jaat yamla pagla diwana” which was sung by legendary singer Mohammad Rafi, where Rafi had almost imitated the dialogue delivery style of Dharmender.

This is another film where the entire Deol family had acted together after Apne. Dharmender, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol had acted in the film. The film had been released on 14th January, 2011. Sunny Deol played the role of an NRI family person who lived in Vancouver, Canada. He stayed there with his mother played by Nafisa Ali and wife.

He missed his father played by Dharmender and brother played by Bobby Deol, who were segregated because Dharmender lived the life of a criminal. Sunny Deol went to India to bring back his younger brother, as his mother was too attached with the child and wanted to see him. Sunny Deol came to Varanasi, and was cheated in a Money Exchange Office. When he saved Dharmender and Bobby Deol from a group of gangsters who attacked them due to cheating, both his father and brother came close to him.

Bobby Deol had an affair with Kulraj Randhawa. But her elder brother Anupam Kher wanted to get her married to an NRI. But he was interested to marry his sister to Sunny Deol, not Bobby Deol. In the meantime Anupam Kher contested election from a constituency in Punjab. Due to the mess relating to marriage of her sister, Sunny Deol’s wife came all the way from Canada. At the end the chaos was sorted out and Bobby Deol got married to the sister of Anupam Kher. Sunny kept his promise and took the entire family back to Canada.

The performances of the most of the artists in the film was excellent including Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Nafisa Ali, Dharmender, Anupam Kher and others. The music of the film composed by a group of composers like Anu Malik, Sandesh Sandilya, Rahul Seth, Sanjoy Choudhury was very entertaining. The songs like “yamla pagla diwana” sung by Sonu Nigam and Nindy Kaur, “charha de rang” sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Sweta Pandit, had very popular. The comedy timing of most of the performers were excellent and the director requires credit for utilizing the talents of the actors and actresses.

The film had earned more than 22 crores in the first week and is destined to become a hit film. Viewers should watch the film.

He was killed due to an accident with the car of Jeetender in the film. Bhupinder Singh’s song picturised on Dharmender titled “ek hi khwab kai baar dekha hai maine” remains as one of the greatest off-beat creations of RD Burman. His performance in the film Maa, based on the life of elephant requires special mention. He took a young elephant away from his mother to use him in Circus. The mother elephant revolted and killed Dharmender’s mother Nirupa Roy in the film. Dharmender’s patent dialogue “maa kasam”, “kamine”, etc., were memorized by youths of the 70s.
Both his sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol are successful actors of bollywood films. Dharmender still has acting left in him and the viewers expect him to carry on the marathon innings that he had started 50 years back.

Happy birthday to dream-girl Hema Malini.

Happy birthday to dream-girl Hema Malini.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to dream girl Hema Malini on 16th October, 2010. She was the uncrowned queen of bollywood films of the 70s.

Her strong dancing skills gave her a separate place in bollywood films. Her performance in the film Sapno Ka Saudagar opposite Raj Kapoor was extremely successful in the late 60s. From there she never looked back. Her film Abhinetri opposite Shashi Kapoor became super hit. Her successful films opposite other stars included Gora Aur Kala opposite Rajender Kumar, Burning Train opposite Dharmender, Johnny Mera Naam opposite Dev Anand, to name a few. Gora Aur Kala became super hit with the successful songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarellal like “tu meri sapno ka rani banegi”, “dheere dheere bol”, etc.

Within short time she formed a brilliant combination with Dharmender and their films started rocking bollywood in the 70s. The pair started off with films like Naya Zamana, Raja Jani and went on to give all time hits like Seeta Aur Geeta, Jugnu, Charas, Sholay, etc. If Sholay is remembered for superlative camerawork of Ramesh Sippy, villainish andaz of Amzad Khan, angry image of Big B, then it is also remembered for tremendous dance performance of Hema Malini. She danced on top of glasses in the song “jab tak hai jaan”. Besides she showed her bravery also in the film by riding on the horse-cart against the gang of dacoits of Gabbar Singh.

Hema Malini did extremely well in off-beat films as well. One of her landmark films included Kinara opposite Jeetender and Dharmender. Gulzar’s films was based on dancing and Hema Malini’s classical dance balanced the story line where Jeetender’s car struck Dharmender and killed him on the spot. Dharmender was the husband of Hema Malini in the film and she lived with his memory in the film.

Hema Malini’s films opposite Big B also did great business. Some of their hit films included Desh Premi, Satte Pe Satta, etc. In the last few years Hema Malini had been seen contributing in character roles in bollywood films like Baghban. She must be proud about the success of her daughter Esha Deol, but is respect of glamour and beauty and dancing skills still Hema Malini is remembered for her dominance during the 70s.

Happy birthday to Jaya Prada.

Happy birthday to Jaya Prada.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Jaya Prada on 3rd April, 2010. Jaya Prada was considered as one of the most gifted actresses of bollywood films of the 80s. She shook the Indian audience with her dancing skills in the film Shankaravaranam.

In the late 70s her film Sargam opposite Rishi Kapoor became superhit with a brilliant story and excellent songs. She played the role of a deaf and dumb girl who had immense dancing callibre which was unearthed by Rishi Kapoor in the film.

The music composed by LP was brilliant by every musical standard and Lata and Rafi were sublime in the songs “dafliwale dafli baja”, “koel boli”, “ramjiki nikli sawari”, etc. In an age of action pact films of Big B, Vinod Khanna, Sargam being a romantic film with Rishi Kapoor and Jaya Prada did excellent business.

From that time Jaya Prada became the no. 1 bollywood actress and acted opposite all the leading stars of bollywood. Her other superhit films include Sharabi, opposite Big B, Akhree Rasta opposite Big B, Kamchor opposite Rakesh Roshan, to name a few.

She acted in a number of films opposite Jeetender as well and all of those films were successful. At that time she got stiff competition from Sri Devi, another South Indian actress who had both acting talent and dancing talent. The films where both of them acted together, the viewers were confused to choose between the two. In Akhree Rasta Jaya Prada did equally well like Sri Devi.

In the 90s, also Jay Prada’s films especially opposite Big B did good business, like Indrajeet or Aaj Ka Arjun. In those films while Big B concentrated on action sequences, Jaya Prada played the romantic part to perfection. With the emergence of new actresses in bollywood films in the 90s like Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, Jaya Prada faded away from the bollywood industry.

She joined politics and had been the parliamentarian for more than a decade. Besides she had played important roles in tamil films and other South Indian films over the years.

In 2010, she had been expelled from the Samajwadi Party by Mulayam Singh Yadav along with other primary members. That can give her some time to devote in bollywood films as well. The viewers expect her to make a comeback in bollywood films in character roles as many of them feel that she still has a lot of acting left in her.

Sujit Kumar died at the age of 75.

Sujit Kumar died at the age of 75.

Veteran actor Sujit Kumar died on 6th February, 2010. He was a successful actor both in hindi films and Bhojpuri films.

In the late 60s, he started playing positive roles. He played the role of the friend of Rajesh Khanna in Shakti Shamanta’s film Aradhana in 1969. He played the mouth organ in style in the song ‘mere sapno ki rani” in Aradhana. But in the early 70s he started playing negative roles.

He played the lead villain in Dharmender’s film Resham Ki Dori. In the mid-70s, there was a tradition of using more than one villain in the same film. He played his role as a villain in the action film Jugnu. He was the other villain other than Ajit and Prem Chopra in the same film. The other films where he played negative roles included Ankhen and Charas.

He played significant roles in the late 70s and early 80s as well. In Big B’s the great gambler, Sujit Kumar played the negative character under Prem Chopra who implicated Big B. In Shaan he worked under Kulbhushan Kharbanda. He had a strong action scene with Shashi Kapoor in the film Shaan.

In the late 80s and early 90s, he played character roles. He played the role of the father of Anil Kapoor in the film Kala Bazar. He was a clerk who led his life with honesty. When he faced charges of corruption, he could not bear it and committed suicide. Anil Kapoor took revenge against the perpetrators of crime in the film.

Sujit Kumar also produced notable films. One of them included Champion, where Sunny Deol and Manisha Koirala played the lead characters. The film was related to the fear created by a villain in the eyes of a small boy who was protected by Sunny Deol. Sunny had to kill the person to drive out the fear from the minds of the little boy.

Sujit Kumar played a very long innings in Bhojpuri films right from the 60s to the 90s. He did not get very prominent roles in his illustrious career. But an actor who had acted in more than 150 hindi films and Bhojpuri films deserve respect from the film fraternity and the viewers. His films should be restored.

Happy birthday to Ramesh Sippy

Happy birthday to Ramesh Sippy.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Ramesh Sippy on 23rd January, 2010. He had been a trend setter in the history of action films in India and was followed by majority of directors of the contemporary period.

Being the relative of GP Sippy, he was associated with hit films from the early part of 70s. The film Andaz with Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini became a musical blockbuster due to the brilliant tunes created for the film. Shankar Jaikishan composed music of the film and the major songs for the film sung by Rafi like “hai na bolo bolo”, “re mamma re mamma”, “dil use do jo jaan de de” became super hit. Seeta Aur Geeta was another super hit film released in 1972. Hema Malini in a double role was as brilliant as Dharmender and Sanjeev Kumar in their respective roles.

In 1975, Ramesh Sippy made the film of his life, which became the most popular entertainer in the entire millennium. The film was related to the dominance of dacoits in the north and central Indian villages. Amzad Khan in the role of Gabbar Singh gave the best performance of his career in the role of the leader of the dacoits. Sanjeev Kumar showed astounding personality in the role of a thakur of the village who lost his two hands and his entire family in his fight against the dacoits. Amitabh Bacchan and Dharmender being two thieves fought against the dacoits and freed the village from their menace. Ramesh Sippy’s casting in the film including heroines like Hema Malini and Jaya Bacchan, comedians like Asrani, Jagdeep was brilliant. The music of RD Burman mesmerized the viewers with songs like “jab tak hai jaan”, “mehbooba mehbooba”, “holi ke din”, etc.

Ramesh Sippy continued his brilliance in another action film Shaan in 1980. Big B, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughun Sinha, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Majhar Khan all were their best in the film. The scene where Sunil Dutt as chased by dogs in the films, was extraordinary and the viewers could not distinguish whether they were seeing Hollywood films or bollywood films. Vindya Goswami and Parveen Babi were at their best in the respective romantic roles. The music of RD Burman was brilliant with hit songs of Rafi, Kishore like “janu meri jaan” and Asha like “pyar karne wale”, to name a few.

Ramesh Sippy was unparallel in the film Shakti, where Dilip Kumar’s personality in the role of honest police officer had outcast angry young man Amitabh Bacchan who played the role of his son and a smuggler in the film. Rakhee played the role of the wife of Dilip Kumar and balanced the two personalities in the film. Amrish Puri played the role of notorious smuggler who was eventually killed by Big B. The film became super hit in the early 80s.

Ramesh Sippy was equally evergreen in romantic films like Saagar. He balanced the romantic performance of Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia and Kamal Hassan in the same film. It is not possible to highlight the achievements of giant director like Ramesh Sippy in a small article considering his success even in the early 90s in films like Akela.

For more than 20 years he was the path-breaker in action films and his films should be preserved and restored to teach the art of film making for the upcoming directors.
