Till 2007, Rani Mukherjee was the number one star of bollywood. From the time Abhishek Bacchan married Aishwarya Rai, all the films of Rani Mukherjee started bouncing back in box-office.

Last year Aishwarya Rai was at the top of the world with the success of Ashutosh Gowarikar’s film Jodha Akbar. But by the time viewers will see her in the role of Sita in Mani Ratnam’s next film, the scenario of bollywood film will undergo a big transformation. Firstly Katrina Kaif had replaced Ash as brand ambassador of many companies. Although both the actresses are beauty-queens, Katrina is much younger than Ash and for those reasons Ash is facing tough competition at every level.

Besides when Katrina had given hits after hits in the last three years including Partner opposite Salman Khan and Govinda, Race opposite Akshay Khanna, Namaste London opposite Akshay Kumar, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya opposite Salman Khan, Singh is Kinng opposite Akshay Kumar, to name a few, Ash had signed in very less number of bollywood films. The other factor which has gone against Ash in the last few years was her inclination to act only opposite Abhishek Bacchan. The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Abhishek Bacchan on 5th February, 2009. He had entertained the viewers over the last 10 years and is expected to do even better in the years to come.

Being the son of superstars Amitabh Bacchan and Jaya Bacchan, he had a great challenge in terms of proving himself in the early part of his career. He got chance in good films like JP Dutta’s Refugee, Dhai Aksar Prem Ki, Bombai Se Aya Mera Dost, but due to comparison of him with his father, his performance was not appreciated inspite of the success of the film.

Then he formed a fantastic pair with actress Rani Mukherjee and his career took a turn. His film Yuva was very successful. He played a negative character in the film opposite Rani Mukherjee. The film was related to the violent scenario in Kolkata caused by politics in academic institutions and the loss to the students due to such unrest. Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi did extremely well in the film along with Abhishek Bacchan.

Abhishek Bacchan and Rani Mukherjee complimented each other in the film Bunty Aur Babli. Both of them took the recourse of falsehood and duped different people all across the country. Before their plan was unearthed they left the place and got involved in other crimes. The music in the film composed by Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy became super hit with popular songs like “dharak dharak”, “chup chupke chup chupke”, “bunty aur babli”, “kajra re kajra re”, etc. Aishwarya Rai amused the viewers with her item number in the film titled “kajra re”. Big B also did well in the film in the role of police inspector.

Abhishek Bacchan did well in the film Dhoom-2 opposite Hrithik Roshan. He investigated the significant operations carried out by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai who were international thieves and stole expensive items from museums and art galleries. Abhishek Bacchan arrested Hrithik Roshan at the end of the film but did not confine him after he disclosed the places where he stored the stolen items.

His other hit films included Guru, opposite Aishwarya Rai and Dostana opposite John Abraham and Priyanka Chopra. This year his film Dilli 6 had been released where he did extremely well opposite Sonam Kapoor and veteran actors in the film.

His tall height and deep voice impressed the viewers over the last few years and the viewers are looking forward to his depiction of the character Ram that he is going to play in the film Ravan.

The viewers of bollywood films wish happy birthday to Bobby Deol, on 27th January, 2009. He had acted in many successful films in his long career, and the new generation expects even better performance from the stylish actor.

Being the son of Dharmender and brother of Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol required some special skills to create his identity and look different to the viewers. He showed his stylish accent in the film Gupt which was a murder mystery. Bobby Deol was alleged to have killed his father Raj Babbar and was sent to jail. He escaped from the jail with the help of Manisha Koirala and proved himself innocent.

He matched the villainish performance of Kajol in the film and balanced the performances of a series of villains in the film including Prem Chopra, Raza Murad, etc. Om Puri was sublime in the role of a police inspector and Bobby Deol showed his personality when both of them met each other. He even gave good lips in the songs composed by Viju Shah like “bechaniya”, “gupt, gupt”, etc.

Producers started casting Bobby Deol in stylish roles especially in action pact films like Soldier. He did very well opposite Preeti Zinta. Most of the film was shot in Australia and Bobby Deol proved himself both as a romantic actor and also action. All the songs of the film were hit including “soldier, soldier”, “mehfil me ekbaar”, etc. His action stunts opposite Suresh Oberoi was ably appreciated by the viewers.

After few years Bobby Deol changed his hair style but continued to act in action films like Badal and Bicchu. In both these films his heroine was Rani Mukherjee who added attraction in the films. Bobby Deol brought out the vengeance in the character of terrorists especially in the film Badal. But someway or the other due to strong domination of Shahrukh Khan mainly in romantic films, Bobby Deol’s films did mediocre business and he did not get the recognition he deserved.

Even in suspense thrillers like Ajnabee, Bobby Deol balanced the villanish performance of Akshay Kumar and individual performances of Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu. The film had many twists and turns and Bobby Deol ultimately took revenge against Akshay Kumar for planting a false case against him.

Bobby Deol even did well in the film Aur Pyar Ho Gaya opposite Aishwarya Rai. His films Jhoom Barabar Jhoom did not do that well in 2007, but his film Heroes in 2008 did good business. With strong competition from Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, Amir Khan and the new heroes Bobby Deol has to do something exceptional to maintain his stardom.

The viewers expect him to do even better in bollywood films in the years to come.

Yesterday, on 27th December, 2008, Lux Sabse Favourite Star Kaun awards were given. Stars like Deepika Padukone, Neha Dhupia, Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and others performed on stage while the awards were given. Sajid Khan anchored the show with his wit and humour.

Although the awards were focused at the performance of 2008, when nominations were shown there were stars who did not contribute to bollywood substantially in 2008, yet were nominated as popular stars. In other words the performances of actors, actresses, comedians, composers and directors in the last few years were also taken into consideration while giving the awards.

Paresh Rawal received the best comedian awards surpassing Johny Lever, Rajpal Yadav and Govinda who were also nominated for the award. Chunkey Pandey announced the award. Paresh Rawal had shown his versatility in many types of films including Sardar, Hera Pheri, Malamaal Weekly, Tamanna, to name a few, and he is considered as one of intellectual actors of modern films. Even if he did not receive the award he would still have been considered a versatile actor after Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah.

Katrina Kaif received the best actress or heroine award for the year. She got it as against Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee, Aishwarya Rai, etc., who were also nominated for the award. Katrina Kaif had worked very hard to develop her hindi, and after blockbusters one after the other like Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, Namaste London, Welcome, Partner, Race, Singh is Kinng, etc., she is the uncrowned queen of bollywood at the moment. It was strange that Priyanka Chopra after performing in so many films like Fashion, Dostana, Chamku, God Tussi Great Ho, did not get a nomination at all. Viewers expect her to get nominated under that category when the filmfare awards will be announced next year.

Akshay Kumar received the award for the best actor (hero) as against Salman Khan, Shahukh Khan, Amir Khan and Big B. After a long time he received the recognition for his hard work. He sang a rap song also from the film Chandni Chowk to China.

Viewers are interested to see whether Akshay Kumar can end the domination of Shahrukh Khan in filmfare awards next year with his successful film Singh is Kinng. Shahrukh Khan had received 7 filmfare awards inspite of brilliant performances of Amir Khan, Anil Kapoor, Akshay Khanna is the passed. Many section of the crowds believed that Shahrukh Khan had rigged the filmfare awards with his influence.

Deepika Padukone received the best new-comer award against Ranbir Kapoor and Kangana Ranaut. She had stormed bollywood with the superlative performance in the film Om Shanti Om. Her performance was equally outstanding in Bacchna Aye Haseeno. Viewers are interested to see her martial art in Chandi Chowk to China.

In a nutshell the awards are just a beginning of recognition of some of the leading stars of bollywood. Composers like Vishal Shekhar, Pritam are yet to open their account in filmfare award and are expected to provide strong challenge to AR Rehman, Shankar –Ehsaan – Loy, Anu Malik next year. Whenever new actors and actresses and technicians receive awards bollywood gets more variety and encouragement for better performances. Lets hope the filmfare awards will be different this year from other years.

Viewers wonder what happened to Rani Mukherjee in 2008, who was maintaining the no. 1 position in bollywood films even till 2006. She was the automatic choice of different types of directors including Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Banshali and others. Not only her films became hit but her performances received critical acclamation.

She was well appreciated for her performance in the film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, directed by Karan Johar. All the songs in the film became superhit including “ladka bara anjana hai”, “kuch kuch hota hai”, “koi mil gaya”, etc., where she matched Shahrukh Khan and Kajol with her soft performance. She followed it up in action films like Badal and Bicchu opposite Bobby Deol. Both these films were related to terrorism and corruption in the Narcotics Identification Sqaud. The moment the news circulated relating to the marriage of Abhishek Bacchan with Aishwarya Rai spread, the bollywood industry became indifferent towards Rani Mukherjee. Anil Kapoor had successful combination with most of the leading actresses of the 80s and 90s, as he had steady box-office all along his career. Rani Mukherjee had shown her acting capability in the last 10 years and has been considered as one of the most versatile performers of the recent time.

Both of them acted together in the film Nayak. Anil Kapoor was a journalist in the film who got a scope of interviewing the Chief Minister of the state, played by Amrish Puri. He was bold enough to ask questions relating to performance of the ministry and the development of the state.


The CM had no proper answer to provide and he fumbled with the responses. At the end he said he could have passed an ordinance and made the journalist a CM for a day, and he would also have realised the challenges that the ministry faces.

Anil Kapoor accepted the challenge. He dismissed all those officers who did not work and misused their power during their tenure. He took strong measures against the corrupted businessmen and also the underworld people.


What he did in one day, many governments failed to do in months time. During that period he visited the village of Rani Mukherjee and got impressed with her innocence. Her father never wanted to get her married to him as he did not have secured job. The songs in the film “challo chale mitwa”, sung by Udit Narayan and picturised on Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee, became very successful.

Ultimately Anil Kapoor contested elections as the people in that place compelled him to face it. Even Paresh Rawal insisted on the issue. He won the elections as people saw his honesty and integrity during the tenure of CM for a day. The film was very successful.


Both the performers (Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee) still have a lot of acting left in them and the viewers expect them to act together in more films in future.
