Wanted revived the stardom of Salman Khan.

Wanted revived the stardom of Salman Khan.

Salman Khan had a soft start of 2009. His film Mai Aur Mrs Khanna did average business. The brilliant shooting in different parts of Australia and melodious music failed to create the magic created by Salman Khan in the 90s with films like Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai. After Mai Aur Mrs Khanna, Salman Khan relied a lot on his next action film Wanted.

Wanted was the remake of the 2006 Telegu film Pokiri. It was directed by Prabhudeva, and was very successful back in South India. The hindi version had also been directed by Prabhu Deva. Boney Kapoor had been the producer of the film. In the hindi version, Salman Khan had been projected as a fearless person, who had worked under the mafia don Prakash Raj. His ruthlessness changed altogether when he met Ayesha Takia.

Salman Khan’s affair with Ayesha Takia completely changed his personality. Previously he was shown as an ill-tempered person who had used his ammunition whenever he had slightest disputes. He became more reasonable after spending time with Ayesha Takia.

Ayesha Takia tried her best to take away Salman Khan from the underworld. A time came when she faced Prakash Raj and spoke with him. She neither supported him nor agreed to his deals. Even she declined to work for him.

The rest of the film was related to the consequences of the refusal of Ayesha Takia to work for the mafia don. After a long time Salman Khan had acted in an action film. His previous films like Veergati, Auzaar, etc. were different from the present film.

Ayesha Takia was very impressive in her individual role. Other performers also did well in the film. There was concern that very few action films had done good business in the last 3 years. In that respect it was very risky on the part of Salman Khan to sign an action film. Even then the film had the elements of entertainment and was well received by the audience. Vinod Khanna did well in a small role. The success of Wanted and London Dreams revived the stardom of Salman Khan who was considered to have equal box-office like that of Shahrukh Khan few years back.

Review of Salaam-e-Ishq.

Review of Salaam –e –ishq.

The viewers of bollywood films had witnessed probably the biggest form of multi-starrer film in the form of Salaam-e –Ishq. Multi-starrer films generally used to be considered as films having two or more actors or actresses. Salaam –e-Ishq had much more number of performers than two or three.

Salman Khan was paired with Priyanka Chopra with the character Rahul. Priyanka Chopra was an aspiring actress. She required a scandal which could create her fame. After that she would have got the scope of acting in Karan Johar’s film. Salman Khan artificially created the love story between him and Priyanka Chopra and made the fans realize that he had an affair with the star and then left her. By the time the playacting was over, Priyanka Chopra fell in love with Salman Khan.

Vidya Balan lost her memory after meeting with an accident and never recognized her husband John Abraham. John’s parents never accepted Tehzeeb, the character of Vidya Balan as she was a muslim. At the end of the film both of them agreed to live with each other inspite of failing to retain her memory. Govinda, the tax-driver in the film fell in love with an American woman who travelled in his taxi. She came to marry her Indian boyfriend but realized that he had married an Indian woman.

Sohail Khan and Isha Kopikaar’s love story showed semi-rural form of romance. Every time they came close to each other they faced obstacle in form or the other. Akshay Khanna declined to marry Ayesha Takia at the beginning of the film, to avoid the responsibilities of married life. After he realized that it was his wrong conception he agreed to marry her. Anil Kapoor, a middle-aged person got attached with a young dance teacher. His closeness with the dance teacher created distance with his wife Juhi Chawla. At the end of the film the relation was revived after Anil Kapoor repented for his wrongdoing.

The biggest asset of the film included its music composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The songs “yah rabba, de de koi pyar bhi agar” sung by Kailash Kher, “tenu le” and “teri ankho ki mastani kajal jo mera salaam” sung by Sonu Nigam stormed bollywood after the release of the film. In fact all the songs were extremely successful.

The other factor which was new was the acceptance of six romantic stories of six heroes and heroines together. The exotic locations used in the film also require special mention. Film makers should get inspired by films like Salaam-e-ishq to make similar types of entertaining films in future.

New actresses had not created impact in bollywood films.

New actresses had not created impact in bollywood films.

New actresses like Koena Mitra, Reema Sen, Riya Sen, Ayesha Takia, Payal Rohatgi and other actresses who had contributed in bollywood films in the last few years had not created any serious impact in the minds of viewers. They had got partial success in the some of the films but had not affected the popularity of frontline actresses like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, etc.

Koena Mitra’s only successful film, include Apna Sapna Money Money, opposite Hritesh Deshmukh. The film was serio-comic in nature and the credit for the success goes to the effort of other actors like Anupam Kher, Chunkey Pandey and others. The song “dekha jo tujhe yaar” became super hit. Riya Sen’s successful film also includes Apna Sapna Money Money, Heroes, etc., where she got major roles. She cannot boast about any serious role which had created any long term impact in the minds of viewers.

Payal Rohatgi’s only successful film includes 36 China Town, opposite Paresh Rawal, where the credit for the success of the film goes to mainly Akshay Khanna, Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. The song “aa ashiqi hai teri” became hit, but the film was a suspense thriller where Payal Rohatgi’s contribution was nothing better than a side actress. Both the Reema Sens are known for one or two films like Malamaal Weekly or Phir Hera Pheri. In Malamaal Weekly Reema Sen acted opposite Ritesh Deshmukh while in Phir Hera Pheri, the other Reema Sen acted opposite Akshay Kumar. Although these films were successful, the result was the combined effort of other stalwart actors.

The only actress in this list whose career went in some direction include Ayesha Takia. Although her successful films like Salaam-e-ishq were related to group effort, and this year’s film 8*10 Tasveer got critical acclamation, viewers accepted the fact that she had acting potentiality which if exploited could lead to success in future. The songs of Salaam-e-ishq were extremely successful including “teri ankhoki matwali kajal ko mera salaam”, “ya rabba de de koi jaan bhi agar”, became landmark hits, and the image of Ayesha Takia was transformed with the performance in the film.

All these actresses had miserably failed to fill up the vacuum created by the aging of successful actresses like Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Preeti Zinta, etc. Bollywood directors and producers have to still rely on the older actresses as they themselves know that these new actresses had hardly created any impact in the minds of the viewers.

Akshay Kumar is dependent on Katrina Kaif.

Akshay Kumar is dependent on Katrina Kaif.

Till last year the viewers of bollywood films thought Akshay Kumar’s sheer brilliance had helped the films to be super hits. He had given highest income tax in the last few years. His hit films more than Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan made him uncrowned monarch of bollywood films.

But after the failure of both of the films released this year, including Chandni Chowk to China and 8*10 Tasveer, the viewers had realized that it was the charishma of Katrina Kaif more than Akshay Kumar which pulled his films. In the films released this year, Deepika Padukone and Ayesha Takia acted opposite Akshay Kumar. Their box-office popularity was not same as Katrina Kaif and that had made a huge difference.

In the last 5 years most the successful films of Akshay Kumar had Katrina Kaif in them. The combination entertained the viewers in the film Humko Dewaane Kar Gaye, and amazed them in the film Namaste London. Katrina played the role of an Indian girl who was born and brought up in London. She was the daughter of Rishi Kapoor who married her to Akshay Kumar, an Indian staying in a village of Punjab. The marriage was solemnized in India but after Katrina reached London she disregarded the marriage. Akshay convinced her throughout the film and ultimately she agreed to return to India with Akshay Kumar. The story was unique and the performances of all the actors were extraordinary.

The films Welcome and Singh is Kinng, also became super hit. The songs of those films including “welcome”, “inshah allah”, “teri ore teri ore” became as popular as the films. Akshay Kumar overtook Shahrukh Khan to become the most popular actor of 2008. But what the viewers had not realized that Katrina Kaif was the main factor behind the success of the films.

During the last few years all the films of Katrina Kaif excepting Yuvvraaj ended up being blockbusters. The films Race, Partner, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, all were super hit. Whether Salman Khan or Govinda or Akshay Khanna acted opposite Katrina Kaif it did not make any difference. Whether the films were suspense thrillers or comedy films it did not matter. What mattered was the screen presence of Katrina Kaif.

Akshay Kumar will again act with Katrina in the film De Dana Dan this year. The viewers know these days that Katrina Kaif is the readymade answer for sheer success in bollywood films. Akshay Kumar has a tough test in films where Katrina Kaif is not going to act opposite him.

Review of the film 8*10 Tasveer

Review of the film 8*10 Tasveer.

Director Nagesh Kukunoor had experimented with an abstract subject in the film 8*10 Tasveer. Akshay Kumar used to be considered the safest actor of bollywood in 2008 after he gave hits after hits. But his film Chandni Chowk to China did not do great business and his fans expected a lot from 8*10 Tasveer.

The film opened with acrobatic stunts of Akshay Kumar, as he ran through a forest, jumped off a cliff, landed in water, stayed under it for sometime in reference to a bear trap. Akshay Kumar initially showed his inclination to become an environment warrior. But when his wealthy father (Benjamin Ghilani) fell off a boat in the presence of his wife played by Sharmila Tagore and died, Akshay Kumar became serious. In fact his father died even in front of his business partner played by Girish Karnad.

Javed Jaffery, the detective in the film convinced Akshay Kumar that his father had not died, but was murdered with previous planning and intelligent execution. Akshay Kumar studied and examined the last photograph of his father. He saw the picture of three of the business partners sitting with his father in the boat.

He tried to study four of them in the photo frame and realize what was there in their mind when they hatched up the plan of murder of his father. The rest of the film hovered around the solving of the murder mystery. Obviously the film had a number of romantic scenes with good locations as well.

The romantic performance of Ayesha Takia opposite Akshay Kumar is worth mentioning. After a long time Ayesha Takia got a prominent role opposite the leading star of bollywood. Even Javed Jaffery’ relief performance in respect of the hyderabadi spoken in the film was also impressive.

But the biggest problem with the film lied in the fact that it was too slow. Nagesh Kukunoor’s treatment relating to murder mystery could not shape in the manner crime thrillers like Race were made earlier by Abbas Mastan. The music of the film was also ordinary.

Inspite of all these factors if the film does good business then it will be the sheer box-office of Akshay Kumar which does not fail often in the recent times.

Directors these days never take risks like Salaam-e-ishq any more.

Directors these days never take risks like Salaam – e –ishq any more.

The directors and producers of bollywood films hardly take any more risk of multistarrer films like that of Salaam –e –ishq anymore. It was not a two-starrer or three – starrer film but had around 6 superstars getting involved in separate love stories each.

On one hand John Abraham got involved with a muslim girl played by Vidya Balan in the film. His family members never accepted the marriage. To make matters worst Vidya Balan lost her memory in an accident and could not get back her memory. John Abraham tried everything possible but could not help her to regain any memory. Yet their relationship survived amidst odds.

Salman Khan did playacting by playing the character Rahul who was involved with an item girl Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka wanted a scandal to become famous and get a major role in Karan Johar’s film. In the process she started loving Salman Khan and at the end of the film their dramatic relationship matured into marriage. Salman Khan was sublime in giving lips in Sonu Nigam’s song “salaam- e-ishq” and “tenu le”.

On the other hand their was comedy relationship between Sohail Khan and Isha Kopikaar. They were married in a joint family and whenever they approached to come close to each other it ended up in an accident in one form or the other. Akshay Khanna also could not marry Ayesha Takia taking into consideration the liabilities of a married person. But he could not disown his weakness towards Ayesha Takia in the entire film.

Anil Kapoor got attached to a young girl which led to disharmony in his family life with his wife Juhi Chawla. His relationship with the girl was revealed to Juhi Chawla who wanted to leave him. At the last scene Anil Kapoor stopped Juhi Chawla from boarding a flight and leaving the place. Anil Kapoor was brilliant in his performance as usual.

The relationship that touched the viewers the most included Govinda’s relationship with a foreigner. The lady came to India without knowing any hindi or any local language. She was attached to an Indian person who loved her in the foreign but declined to marry her due to family restrictions.

Govinda took the girl in his taxi to the desired destination and during the travel started loving her. He tried his best to get her married to her boyfriend, but when he failed in his mission he accepted the foreigner as his own wife. The simplicity of Govinda in the role of an uneducated taxi-driver appealed to the viewers more than any other’s performance.

Salaam-e-ishq did good business in India and oversees, but the cost of production was so high that it never ended up being a blockbuster.

These days bollywood producers and directors experiment with two or three stars together in one film but not 6 actors and actresses in major roles like Salaam-e-ishq any more.
