Noukadubi is a refined commercial venture.

Noukadubi is a refined commercial venture.

Rituporno Ghosh had made a decent effort with the Bengali film Noukadubi based on Rabindranath Tagore’s literature. The film had been based on the epic story Noukadubi, a piece of literature which attracted the attention of other directors as well. Story-teller Ajoy Kar had also made the film Noukadubi in the 50s on the same piece of literature.

In the film Jishu Sengupta, who was a law student loved the talented uptown girl played by Raima Sen. Due to the insistence of his father he had to sacrifice his love and married a rustic villager played by Riya Sen. He later found out that his wife was already married to Prasenjit Chatterji and was separated from her wife after a boat accident. The story hovers around the theme whether Jishu Sengupta would have reunited Riya Sen to her husband Prasenjit Chatterji or not.

Rituporno Ghosh had made a hindi film Kashmakash with the same subject and it had been a challenge in doing justice with Tagore literature. The story had been read a big section of readers. One of the achievements of Rituporno Ghosh had been the credit of utilizing Raima Sen and Riya Sen in the respective roles. Although Raima Sen had previously done off-beat roles, Riya Sen had done the role of the rustic villager the first time.

There was hardly any make up given to Riya Sen. Her speech had also been soft and folk-based where she did a commendable job. Rituporno Ghosh had amazed the viewers by giving the smart upstart role to Raima Sen and soft villager’s role to Riya Sen. Jishu Sengupta and Prasenjit Chatterji had previously acted in these types of roles so also showed a refined approach. The effort of Rituporno Ghosh had been a decent effort.

The film should get good response and the viewers should appreciate the effort of a director to do a period film based on the life of bengalies more than 70 years back. Viewers should watch the film.

Happy birthday to Moon Moon Sen.

Happy birthday to Moon Moon Sen. The viewers of bollywood films and Bengali films wish happy birthday to Moon Moon Sent the daughter of the legendary actress Suchitra Sen on 28th March, 2011. She had acted in around 60 films and 40 teleserials to date.

She was born as the daughter of Dibanath Sen and Suchitra Sen on 28th March, 1958. She studied in Loreto Convent, Darjeeling and Loreto House, Kolkata. She did her Masters in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. She started her acting career with the film Andar Bahar in 1984.

She was successful opposite Tapas Pal in the film Baidurjya Rahashya. It was crime thriller directed by Dadasaheb Phalke Wining Director Tapan Sinha. Bosonto Choudhury acted in a double role in the film. Her other successful Bengali films included Rajbadhu, Tumi Kato Sundar, Pujarini, Neel Nirjane, etc.

In respect of hindi films she acted in Musafir, Sheesha, Pyar Ki Jeet, Lekin, Jeevan Ek Sunghursh, etc. She played the role of the elder sister of Madhuri Dixit in the film 100 Days. She was killed in the film by the villain and that was the subject matter of the film. She acted in few Tamil, Telegu films as well, like 12B, Sirivennela, etc.

She also worked in the field of advertisement. She acted as models in soap advertisements and endorsements of other products. Her both daughters Raima Sen and Riya Sen established themselves in bollywood films. While Raima Sen had been successful in films like Parineeta, God Mother, Riya Sen had been successful in films like Apna Sapna Money Money, Heroes, etc. The viewers expect Moon Moon Sen to continue acting in character roles in future.

Riya Sen remained a mediocre actress.

Riya Sen remained a mediocre actress.

Riya Sen, the granddaughter of famous actress Suchitra Sen, remained a very mediocre actress even after being in the bollywood industry for more than 10 years. She was born as the daughter of Moon Moon Sen in 1981.

Her film career started in 1991 as a child artist in the film Vishkanya. In 2001 she acted in the film Style. Her experience as model helped her in getting offers in bollywood films. After acting in films like Jhankar Beats, she got a prominent role in David Dhawan’s comedy film Shaadi No. 1 in 2005.

Shaadi No. 1 was a comedy film in which Riya Sen along with two other girls lured Fardeen Khan, Zaid Khan and his friend and had an affair with them. The wives of all these women complained about the activities of their husbands to Sanjay Dutt. Sanjay Dutt compelled Riya Sen and the other girlfriends to leave Fardeen Khan and company as their marital life was getting disturbed. David Dhawan’s comedy treatment entertained the viewers.

She also got a small role in the film Heroes with Sohail Khan. Sohail Khan and his friend made a video film on real life stories of heroes who had sacrificed their lives for the nation. After seeing the lives of Salman Khan, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Mithun Chakravarthy the two students including Sohail Khan got transformed. The music of the film was equally impressive.

But if her career is compared with Suchitra Sen, then she had remained only a mediocre actress. Suchitra Sen was called by Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Gulzar to act in landmark films. Most of her films remained landmarks in bollywood films history including Devdas, Musafir, Bombai Ka Babu, Mamta, Aandhi, to name a few. She even portrayed the character of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film Aandhi.

Riya Sen should act in prominent roles of popular directors to get recognition and also improve her acting.

New actresses had not created impact in bollywood films.

New actresses had not created impact in bollywood films.

New actresses like Koena Mitra, Reema Sen, Riya Sen, Ayesha Takia, Payal Rohatgi and other actresses who had contributed in bollywood films in the last few years had not created any serious impact in the minds of viewers. They had got partial success in the some of the films but had not affected the popularity of frontline actresses like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, etc.

Koena Mitra’s only successful film, include Apna Sapna Money Money, opposite Hritesh Deshmukh. The film was serio-comic in nature and the credit for the success goes to the effort of other actors like Anupam Kher, Chunkey Pandey and others. The song “dekha jo tujhe yaar” became super hit. Riya Sen’s successful film also includes Apna Sapna Money Money, Heroes, etc., where she got major roles. She cannot boast about any serious role which had created any long term impact in the minds of viewers.

Payal Rohatgi’s only successful film includes 36 China Town, opposite Paresh Rawal, where the credit for the success of the film goes to mainly Akshay Khanna, Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor. The song “aa ashiqi hai teri” became hit, but the film was a suspense thriller where Payal Rohatgi’s contribution was nothing better than a side actress. Both the Reema Sens are known for one or two films like Malamaal Weekly or Phir Hera Pheri. In Malamaal Weekly Reema Sen acted opposite Ritesh Deshmukh while in Phir Hera Pheri, the other Reema Sen acted opposite Akshay Kumar. Although these films were successful, the result was the combined effort of other stalwart actors.

The only actress in this list whose career went in some direction include Ayesha Takia. Although her successful films like Salaam-e-ishq were related to group effort, and this year’s film 8*10 Tasveer got critical acclamation, viewers accepted the fact that she had acting potentiality which if exploited could lead to success in future. The songs of Salaam-e-ishq were extremely successful including “teri ankhoki matwali kajal ko mera salaam”, “ya rabba de de koi jaan bhi agar”, became landmark hits, and the image of Ayesha Takia was transformed with the performance in the film.

All these actresses had miserably failed to fill up the vacuum created by the aging of successful actresses like Vidya Balan, Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Preeti Zinta, etc. Bollywood directors and producers have to still rely on the older actresses as they themselves know that these new actresses had hardly created any impact in the minds of the viewers.

Riya Sen –the young performer of bollywood.

Riya Sen –the young performer of bollywood

Riya SenRiya Sen, the daughter of Moon Moon Sen and the granddaughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen, had started her career in the early 1990s, with the film Vishkanya, where she played the role of young Puja Bedi. She had a lot to prove as her grandmother had dominated Bengali films and acted in dignified roles in bollywood films under the direction of legendary directors like Bimal Roy, Gulzar, etc.

Riya Sen acted in the film Jhankaar Beats which was related to compositions of RD Burman, with other performers like Shayan Munshi, Rahul Bose, Juhi Chawla, Sanajy Puri, and others. She got partial success in the film Shaadi No. 1, where she herself, Aarti Chhabria and Sophie Chowdhury influenced Fardeen Khan, Zayed Khan and Sharman Joshi and that led to problems in their marital life. Their wives Esha Deol, Ayesha Takia and Soha Ali Khan were informed by Sanjay Dutt, about the activities of their husbands. Sanjay Dutt helped all these husbands to maintain their wedlock and be loyal to their wives. Although Riya Sen’s role was small, she kept her mark in her performance

Riya SenShe acted in small roles in the films Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Qayamat, Plan, etc., in small roles, and got a prominent role in the film Apna Sapna Money Money. In that film she acted along with other performers like Ritesh Deshmukh, Celina Jaitley, Anupam Kher, etc. The film was serio-comic in nature and Ritesh Dehsmukh disguised himself as a music teacher who came to Anupam Kher’s wife to teach music and marry his daughter.

She also performed in musical videos, and also acted in Malayalam film titled Ananthbhadram which was critically acclaimed. Inspite of all these performances she is still in search of landmark roles in bollywood films, which can establish her in the competitive film industry. Even her sister Raima Sen got scope of acting in good films like Godmother with Shabana Azmi

Riya SenThe viewers expect Riya Sen to do well in good roles in future and continue the legacy that was built of monumental performances of her grandmother Suchitra Sen.
